Drink drive suspect arrested after 4 x 4 driven into front of shop

A 40-year-old man suspected of being drunk behind the wheel of a 4 x 4 was arrested after the vehicle crashed into the front of a shop.

The Birkdale Cheese Centre store on Liverpool Road in Southport was struck by a Suzuki Jimny last night (Sunday).

Merseyside Police confirmed the force was contacted at around 9.30pm, following reports the car had mounted the kerb and collided with the front of the shop.

A man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving while unfit to drive through drink or drugs, theft of a motor vehicle, driving while disqualified and having no insurance.

A post on the shop's Facebook page reads: "A very sad night for a business established nearly 50 years.

"We will crack on hopefully be ready for opening time tomorrow but please be patient with us."

Customers and friends flocked to the post to send well-wishes.

Sheilah Rimmer wrote: "Very sad, just when things were getting back to normal. Glad no one was hurt."

Lesley Holgate said: "That’s so awful for you, I hope you get up and running soon."

Wendy Marland wrote: "Oh no, I'm so sorry."
