Drink drive businessman seriously injured and kids hurt when he crashed into roundabout, court heard

A dad crashed into a roundabout while over the legal booze limit with his wife and kids in the car, a court heard.

Garage owner Urosh Ventaj, 40, broke his back and fractured his shoulder and collar bone when he lost control of his Subaru Impreza in the early hours.

His family also suffered 'some injuries' and 'his whole life was turned upside down', his defence solicitor told the bench.

Ventaj, from Longsight, was found to have 97mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood. The legal limit is 80mg.

The crash took place in Northamptonshire but the case was heard before Manchester's magistrates on Wednesday. Ventaj admitted drink driving.

Prosecutor Emily Lloyd told the court that the crash took place on the A43 in Northampton on April 15 at 2.19am.

The court heard how Ventaj had a previous conviction of driving without due care and attention dating back to 2017.

Defending, Brian Koffman argued that Ventaj had suffered enough from the accident and that too lengthy a ban would affect his buisness.

He said: "He pleaded guilty at the first opportunity to this matter. He was travelling along a road with which he wasn't familiar.

"It was late at night, there was no traffic about, it was a single vehicle collision.

"He misjudged what the position was when it hit the backing (of the roundabout) and then flew across.

Two young men taken to hospital with stab wounds after attack in Failsworth

Police launch investigation after report a man was raped in Manchester city centre

"He suffered a fractured right shoulder, fractured collar bone, fractured his back in two places and injuries to his legs.

"He has been in and out of hospital ever since. He is due to go back for further operations.

"His wife and two children suffered some injuries as well. It has turned his whole life upside down.

"The reason why the alcohol was consumed was he had underestimated how much he had drunk. If he realised he was going to be over the limit he would not have driven at all."

In mitigation, Mr Koffman added: "He owns a garage and has had to borrow substantial money, he owes eight to ten thousand pounds. They have no other income apart from tax credit and child benefit which his wife receives.

"He thought there might have been some mechanical defect with the vehicle, but as a result of the damage to the car we are unable to find any basis that there was a mechanical default even though he thinks that may have contributed to it.

"He wishes to express his sincere remorse. This has been a tragic accident and it will have an impact on him for a very long amount of time.

Sentencing Ventaj, magistrate David Chadwick said: "We have taken great care and consideration on this sentence.

"You did show remorse and you did have injuries and you provided us with some letters in your support.

"We are going to offer you the drink driving rehabilitation course, you will have to pay for that.

"We are going to ban you for 12 months."

As well as the ban, Ventaj was ordered to pay £235 in court costs.
