Drill and case left on electric hob forces man and dog to flee house fire

A drill went up in flames after it was left on a hot electric hob by mistake.

Firefighters were called out to a property on Stainton Grove in Sunderland to tackle the blaze.

Two crews attended and came across a blaze in the kitchen which was started as a result of a drill and case being left on top of the hob, which was still switched on.

The man and his dog had been led to safety by a neighbour and escaped injury-free from the incident at 2pm on Monday.

However, the kitchen was ruined by smoke from the fire and there were only charred remains of the drill.

Crews extinguished the fire and left the scene at 2.21pm.

A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "We were called out to a fire inside a property at Stainton Grove, Sunderland on Monday, May 13.
