Drifters accused of killing yoga teacher and tourist may face death penalty

Oct. 13--A trio of drifters who allegedly robbed and killed a tourist in San Francisco and a hiker out for a stroll with his dog in a neighboring county could be sentenced to death if convicted on all charges, prosecutors said Monday.

In a frantic manhunt that was boosted by hundreds of tips, Portland, Ore., police last week arrested Morrison Lampley, 23; Sean Angold, 24; and Lila Alligood, 18, on a warrant out of Marin County.

The three face two murder charges and various counts that include robbery, vehicle theft, animal cruelty and possession of stolen property, said Marin County Dist. Atty. Edward Berberian. All could potentially face the death penalty or life in prison without parole, Berberian said.

This month, authorities say, the three robbed and shot a 23-year-old Canadian tourst, Audrey Carey, in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park then fled north and did the same to Steve Carter, 67, a beloved tantric yoga teacher.

Carey's body was found face down in the park on the morning of Oct. 3. Two days later, as Carter was walking his brown Doberman pinscher on a dusty trail in an unincorporated area of Marin County, authorities say the three used the same gun that killed Carey to fatally shoot Carter and wound his dog.

Carter, who used to live in the area before retiring to Costa Rica with his wife, was staying with friends in town while his spouse received cancer treatment.

After he was shot, Lampley, Angold and Alligood stole his car and fled to Oregon, Marin County Sheriff's Office officials said. They were tracked down through security camera footage from local businesses, tips that flooded into detectives and GPS in the car, officials said.

Jail records show the three began their extradition to California on Monday. Their first court appearance has not yet been scheduled, Berberian said.
