Dries Mertens, Teemu Pukki and the players linked with Manchester United on deadline day

The January transfer window is coming to a close and Manchester United's name continues to be on the lips of many across the country.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's capture of Bruno Fernandes on Thursday provided a significant boost to the midfield, which has been depleted by injuries to Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba.

New forwards have continued to be touted for a move to the club though, with United short of options in the final third with Marcus Rashford having his own injury problems.

As a result, plenty of names have emerged as rumoured targets for United on deadline day and here is the lowdown on those names.

Dries Mertens

Napoli forward Dries Mertens has been linked with a wealth of clubs in the January transfer window, as he enters the final months of his contract with the Serie A side.

On deadline day, The Independent stated that the Belgian international was one of the names on a list of striking targets for United, with it added that an enquiry was made to Napoli.

The 32-year-old has scored four goals in 14 Serie A matches this season, as well as contributing a further two assists.

Joshua King

Former Manchester United striker Joshua King was heavily linked with an exit from Bournemouth to return to Old Trafford, with Eddie Howe confirming a bid from United.

That followed a report from The Telegraph, which stated that United had failed with a bid to sign the Norwegian international on Thursday evening.

It was speculated that another bid from United could emerge on deadline day but the rumours soon shifted to new targets.

Teemu Pukki

The Independent also stated United considered a move for Norwich City striker Teemu Pukki in the January transfer window, following his impressive Premier League performances.

Finland international Pukki has scored 11 goals for the relegation-threatened Canaries this season, as well as contributing three assists in his 23 appearances in the top-flight.

However, there wasn't too much in the report as it suggested Pukki's name was just mentioned in passing.

Danny Ings

Manchester United failed with an approach to sign Southampton forward Danny Ings on deadline day during their striker search, The Telegraph reports.

The 27-year-old has been integral behind the Saints' surge up the Premier League table in recent weeks, scoring 14 goals this season - 13 of which have come since the end of September.

However, unsurprisingly, the report stated that Southampton were not willing to sanction a move for the former Liverpool forward.
