Drey Wright reveals Hibs phone call that sold club to him as he seals Easter Road switch

Drey Wright knew he wanted to join Hibs after his first conversation with the club.

He became Jack Ross’ first signing ahead of the 2020/21 campaign after signing a two-year deal with the capital outfit.

The former St Johnstone winger underwent a medical with the Hibees last week and has been training with the squad at East Mains before putting pen to paper.

And the 25-year-old knows the pressure will be on him to deliver after making the move from Perth.

He said: “No-one had to explain the size of Hibernian as a club to me and as soon as I got off the phone from speaking to the gaffer and Graeme Mathie I knew it was the move I wanted to make.

“I spoke to a few boys who have played here and it was an easy decision in the end.

“First and foremost, I’ll give it everything I’ve got in every game. I know I’ll be expected to bring goals and assists, to help bring drive and energy to contribute in the attacking areas, but I also want to build a good relationship with the full-backs and make sure I can offer them some protection.

Scott McMann is reportedly attracting interest from Preston (Rob Casey/SNS Group)

“They’ve made me feel really welcome and I can’t wait for the games to get up and running.”

Boss Ross revealed that Wright was a player he’d been tracking for some time and was glad to be able to get his man, especially under difficult circumstances.

Adding more width to the squad at Easter Road was a priority, and hopes the wide man can continue the form he showed for the Saints now he’ll be turning out in the green and white.

“We’ve identified key areas in the squad where we think it’s important to strengthen and the wider area is one of them. We have Daryl Horgan and Martin Boyle but there’s not much width beyond that, even with the younger players that are coming through.

“We wanted another option in that area, which allows us to be flexible in how we use Daryl and Martin. Drey’s quick, he’s direct and enjoyed a really good season with St Johnstone.

“He was one we’d identified a long time ago, so we’re pleased – despite everything that’s been going on in the world – that we’ve been able to get him in. He’s been good in training, settled in well with the group and I’m looking forward to seeing him in action properly.”
