Drey Wright rejects St Johnstone extension as Hibs and Bristol Rovers move for winer

Drey Wright has opened the door for Hibs and Bristol Rovers to make their move after he knocked back St Johnstone ’s new offer.

The English winger had been keen to extend his two-year stay at McDiarmid Park but he was asked to take a brutal wage cut.

Saints were informed of his decision on Sunday.

Wright, 25, was one of the higher earners as Saints exploited the cross-border rule to take him north from Colchester for free two seasons ago.

The door remains open if Saints were to come back in with an improved offer but it would have to be increased significantly. Wright is already a target for Hibs boss Jack Ross and has also been a long-term option for Bristol Rovers who are keen to lure him back south.

Ross is keen to bring in the winger and has also looked at Accrington Stanley’s Jordan Clark.

But Wright has plenty of Premiership experience and could hit the ground running at Easter Road.

The Hibs boss can’t finalise any deals until the wage deferrals of his current players are addressed.

There is also the likelihood Ross will also see his budget cut as a result of the Covid-19 lockdown.
