Drew Lock ‘slowly making strides’ at Broncos practice

On the first day of mandatory minicamp, Broncos second-round draft pick Drew Lock ran over a defender at practice. That sent Lock hype into overdrive on social media but it’s important to note that the Missouri product still has a long way to go.

Denver brought in Joe Flacco to be the quarterback of the present and the Broncos won’t rush Lock in his development.

“I think Joe’s had a really good offseason, camp or however you want to phrase it,” coach Vic Fangio said after practice Tuesday. “I think Drew is slowly getting better — which he’s got a major undertaking here of No. 1 learning a new offense, No. 2 playing under center more and just getting the speed of the NFL game.

“Come training camp once we get the pads on, it’ll amp up even more. I think he’s slowly making strides. And I don’t mean slowly as a negative, I think he’s getting a little bit better every day.”

Denver is expected to begin training camp in mid-July, which is when the real action will begin for Lock. If he continues progressing through the summer and performs well in the preseason, the Broncos might have a hard time preventing the Lock hype from getting out of control. Denver fans have always loved backup quarterbacks.

If all goes well, though, Broncos fans won’t mind having Lock learn while sitting on the bench if it means Flacco is winning games.
