Drew Lock might have some rust to shake off when he returns to practice

Broncos quarterback Drew Lock has recovered from a thumb injury but he’s still on injured reserve. Denver is expected to have him return to practice after their Week 10 bye.

Broncos offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello was asked Thursday what he’ll begin working on first with the QB when he returns to practice.

“The mental stuff, he’s been doing that with us and all that,” Scangarello said. “Again, every guy is a little different. We’ll see where he’s at, but I just think he just wants to go out here and take snaps, cadence, break the huddle, visualize and have the guys and all that stuff.

“Scout team reps and all that stuff, that’s just really honing your craft and that’s an opportunity for him to get better, get him along and see where we can take him.”

Lock will undoubtedly have some rust to shake off so fans probably shouldn’t expect him to start right after returning to practice.

Denver can only bring back two players from IR per season and one of the slots is expected to go to wide receiver Tim Patrick. That probably means the Broncos will decide between bringing back Lock or tight end Jake Butt.

Lock was selected by Denver in the second round of April’s draft out of Missouri. He threw for 3,498 yards with 28 touchdowns against eight interceptions as a senior in 2018.
