Drew Lock learning and improving at Broncos’ OTAs

Broncos veteran quarterback Joe Flacco created a bit of a stir when he said it wasn’t his job to mentor rookie Drew Lock — but he was right. The coaching staff is responsible for grooming the young QB and it falls on Lock to observe Flacco and learn from him.

With the second week or organized team activities about to wrap up, it sounds like Lock has been observing and learning — and improving.

“Drew’s doing what he’s supposed to do,” wide receiver Courtland Sutton said after practice on May 20. “He’s learning. He’s taking every rep that he can as seriously as he possibly could and should at this point in time. I got to see him for two weeks now and he’s doing what he’s supposed to be doing.

“He’s improving. He’s making throws as he’s supposed to throw. He’s just learning the system. That’s the biggest thing. He’s just trying to learn the system just like us. Once he gets it, he’ll be more comfortable, and he’ll be able to start distributing the ball around like he really wants to.”

Denver selected Lock in the second round of this year’s draft and the team views him as their QB of the future. But the Broncos won’t rush Lock onto the field. If all goes well, Flacco will remain the starter for all of the 2019 season and Lock will continue to learn and develop from the sidelines.

The Missouri product has accepted that role and he’ll aim to be ready whenever called upon, whether it’s in 2020 or sooner.
