Drew Lock is first Broncos rookie QB to win first two games since John Elway

Last week, Drew Lock became the Broncos’ first rookie quarterback since Gary Kubiak to win his NFL debut with a 23-20 win over the Chargers. Lock followed up that performance with another win over the Texans on Sunday.

Lock is now the team’s first rookie QB to win his first two starts since John Elway in 1983. Only four players have done it in franchise history.

Drew Lock 2019
John Elway 1983
Craig Penrose 1976
Marlin Briscoe 1968

Lock finished the day 22-of-27 for 309 yards and three touchdowns, marking the third-most passing yards by a rookie in team history. He also became the team’s first rookie QB to throw for over 308 yards since Elway in 1983 (345).

“He played obviously very well,” coach Vic Fangio said of Lock after the game. “Made a great jump from week one to week two, which is what you’re hoping for. Thought he threw the ball much, much better than he did last week.

“Thought last week he missed at least four or five throws that he could have made. I don’t think he missed many today. And to do that on his first road start against a team that’s going to be in the playoffs, probably win their division, makes it even better.”

Lock is now 2-0 in the NFL. He has completed 72.7 percent of his passes for 443 yards with five touchdowns, good for a 111.4 passer rating.
