Drew Brees meeting with hand specialist after injuring thumb

New Orleans Saints fans were struck by a scary situation in Sunday’s loss to the Los Angeles Rams, when a collision injured quarterback Drew Brees’ throwing hand. Brees was sidelined for the rest of the game as team medical staff taped up his right wrist and thumb, and he was spotted wearing what a former NFL team doctor identified as a stability brace, which would suggest possible ligament tears.

“I really don’t know at this point,” Brees said of what’s next during his postgame media availability, having received an X-ray after the game. “There’s only so much you can do here other than having a doc look at it on the sideline. I’m going to see a hand specialist, get his opinion and we’ll see what the next steps are.”

Brees added that he would be meeting with a specialist in Los Angeles on Sunday night before flying up to Seattle for the Saints’ week of preparation for a game against the Seattle Seahawks. He’s battled through injuries in the past including a tweaked oblique muscle and painful knee sprain, but said that “this felt like it was something a bit more significant.”

For his part, Saints coach Sean Payton is waiting to make any formal announcements, having said it would be about two days before any official word from the team on Brees’ status would be forthcoming. Whatever comes next, the Saints clearly aren’t feeling optimistic.
