Drew Brees joins Saints teammates, continues pregame warmup routine

Things are moving as scheduled for New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, who joined his teammates after two weeks away while looking for answers on his injured throwing hand. Brees took the field at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome for warmups before the Saints’ Sunday Night Football game against the Dallas Cowboys and stuck to his routine of stretching and practiced throwing motions.

Brees won’t play against the Cowboys, or any of the next several opponents the Saints have lined up. Doctors suggested he could miss six to eight weeks while rehabbing his injury, but after trying out his surgically-repaired thumb, Brees is reportedly optimistic that he can return in as few as five weeks. He underwent a procedure to insert a brace to reinforce and protect a ruptured ligament in his thumb.

Still, it’s great to see him back among his teammates and moving as if it’s business as usual. It’s worth noting that Brees isn’t wearing a bulky immobilizing cast — it appears he’s covered the incision site with a strip of black athletic tape. That will allow him to practice gripping and eventually throwing the football, which will decide when he’s able to return to action.
