Drew Brees goes deep to Cyril Grayson Jr. in play of the day

Who says that Drew Brees can’t throw deep anymore?

The New Orleans Saints quarterback linked up with wide receiver Cyril Grayson Jr. on a bomb to help close out the second practice of training camp on Saturday, finding the former LSU Tigers track star downfield. Grayson was able to turn on the jets and put some distance between himself and cornerback Eli Apple, one of the fastest players on the team, to get to the right spot at the right time and corral the pass from Brees.

It’s encouraging to see Brees still testing the Saints defense downfield after he struggled to connect with his receivers in the playoffs last season. This play is also an example of what Grayson offers the team in terms of pure athletic ability — more plays like this will only help build his case to make the final roster. Take a look for yourself:

Naturally it’s early in training camp, and Brees has to do much more than this to silence his critics. At the same time, Grayson must continue to improve and demonstrate his value to the Saints throughout the summer. But if he can manage to start consistently carving up secondaries like this, the Saints might have found another diamond in the rough.
