Drew Barrymore still has her red cowboy hat from E.T. and keeps it in very special place

Drew Barrymore has revealed she's kept the red cowboy hat she wore in E.T. when she was a little girl.

The former child star, now 45, landed the role of Elliott's little sister Gertie when she was just six-years-old, with the character dressing as a cowgirl during one scene.

Now four decades later the hat Gertie wore takes pride of place in Drew's daughters' bedroom.

She said she is so glad she kept it and is now able to share such an important part of her history with her little girls, Olive, eight, and Frankie, six, who she shares with her ex husband Will Kopelman.

Drew told Domino Kids: "I am absolutely terrible at keeping things. I lose everything. But I do have the red cowboy hat I wore in E.T.

"It is in the girls' room somewhere and reminds me that I was 6 years old wearing that hat. I'm so glad I still have it."

She added: "When we're kids, we don't think something will be important to us one day; we clean out our room and throw stuff away.

"It's nice if parents put something of theirs in their kids' rooms, so it's a transference of memories and energy."

E.T. was only the second film of Drew's career.

She starred in horror film Altered States when she was just four-years-old.

Since then she has starred in several films, including Never Been Kissed, Charlie's Angels and Donnie Darko.

Drew married her first husband Jeremy Thomas when she was only 19-years-old but they split just three months later.

She was married two more times: to Tom Green from 2000 to 2002 and to Will Kopelman from 2012 until 2016.
