Dress shop worker didn’t recognise Diana and told her ‘Harrods is around the corner’

The dress shop where Princess Diana bought her honeymoon gown nearly lost their most high profile client ever when they almost sent her on her way to Harrods.

The stunning peach dress is part of the new Royal Style in the Making exhibit.

Visitors will also be able to see her iconic Elizabeth and David Emanuel bridal gown at her former home of Kensington Palace.

Diana made the buy in nearby Bellville Sassoon.

But curator Matthew Storey revealed that the oblivious shop worker didn't recognise the Princess and almost pushed her into the path of a rival.

He told People: "It almost didn't happen.

"The sales associate told her that Harrod's department store 'is just around the corner'.

"You can imagine how Belinda [Bellville] and David [Sassoon] felt when they realised the future Princess of Wales had been turned away."

Thankfully for the owners, Diana soon returned.

She came back with her mother and picked out the blue dress she wore for her engagement announcement alongside Prince Charles.

Bellville Sassoon went on to get many more orders from the Princess.

They created many looks for Diana, including the peach ensemble she wore as she set off on her honeymoon.

The dress that the Princess of Wales wore on her wedding day nearly 40 years ago is on display for all to see.

Her sons Prince William and Prince Harry loaned items to the exhibition, which launched a month before Diana would have turned 60.

It was designed by David and Elizabeth Emanuel for the July 1981 wedding.

Ms Emanuel recalled Diana phoning to ask her and her then-husband to make her dress.

She said: "It was one of those strange moments where you know your life is never going to be the same again."

The exhibition also features a rare surviving toile for the 1937 gown worn by the Queen Mother for King George VI's coronation.

The display in London will continue until January. 2
