‘Dress for the car you tryna sell girly’: Woman has job interview at Audi dealership. Here’s why people are telling her to change

They say dress for the job you want, not the job you have. One woman recently went to the internet for interview advice. People weren’t shy about offering advice on the proper outfit for a job interview at a car dealership.

Earlier this week, Layla Maria (@laylooka) posted a TikTok seeking feedback on the outfit she planned to wear for an interview at an Audi dealership.

She captioned the TikTok, “For people who work at dealerships I have a job interview at Audi. Is this a good outfit?”

Layla Maria is wearing a form-fitting navy blue short-sleeved shirt, black pants, and chunky close-toed shoes. Most people agreed it isn’t the right look to work at Audi.

The right look for Audi?

Audi is a luxury German automaker. Most of its 2025 vehicles cost over $50,000. Several cost over $100,000.

Given the price point, it’s arguably understandable that people think Layla Maria should dress up more for the job interview.

Some were more tactful than others. “Dress for the car you tryna sell girly,” one urged.

A person who says they used to work for Acura joked that “it’s Audi, not Mitsubishi.” Another asked her to consider if she’d see a person in an Audi wearing that outfit.

Several people who say they worked in dealerships told her she should wear plain pants and a blouse, rather than the t-shirt style top she has on.

“Blazer is needed. Plus maybe lower height dress shoes or mid high heels,” wrote one.

A person who says they worked at a dealership suggested she try Ross Dress for Less. “Ross was my SPOT for business casual outfits,” they said.

The best interview attire

While it is a good rule of thumb to dress nicely for any job interview, what that means varies widely depending on the company and the position.

You wouldn’t expect someone applying for a blue-collar job to show up in a Brooks Brothers suit, for example. Nor would a polo shirt and khakis likely be seen as the right fit for an interview for an executive position at a Fortune 500 company.

There’s no exact right answer.

So when choosing your interview look, consider what people wear to work there. It’s best not to wear anything revealing, dirty, or damaged. This is the first impression you’re giving your potential employer. You don’t want your outfit to make sure it’s your last.
