Dreamy eco-friendly hotel to open on Arctic Circle with Northern Lights views

Explorers will soon be able to spend a night in a luxury hotel right on the Arctic Circle - and enjoy direct views of the Northern Lights in the process.

New hotel Svart will be opening in Norway on the Arctic Circle in 2022, at the base of the Holandsfjorden glacier.

There will be 99 bedrooms, four restaurants and a 1,000 sq m spa with both indoor and outdoor offerings, while guests will get to indulge in a wide range of activities from ice climbing to yoga in the midnight sun.

Oh, and the hotel has some serious eco-friendly credentials.

Designed by architects Snøhetta , the brains behind Norway's underwater restaurant , Svart aims to become the world's first 'energy positive' hotel (in a nutshell, producing more energy than it uses).

In fact, the hotel is set to become a fully off-grid, carbon neutral and zero waste property within the first five years of its opening.

Svart is expected to open in 2022 (Svart)

Everything has been designed to have minimal impact on the surroundings, from a wooden structure supporting it above the seabed so as to not disturb marine life, to an on-site sustainable farm, education center and a design laboratory.

Other efforts will include solar panels on the roof, as well as eco-friendly building materials in a bid to reduce the overall carbon footprint.

The eco-friendly hotel will be tucked into the breathtaking landscape (Svart)

The hotel's glass-fronted, circular design means that guests will be able to take in the views of the surrounding landscape no matter what the weather.

It also means that those who want to see the Northern Lights won't have to go much further than their bedrooms or the hotel restaurants and bars - not a bad setting for a pre-dinner cocktail.

In the summer, the hotel will have a wooden boardwalk for those who want a stroll outside.

Of course you'll have to wait until 2022 to check it out for yourself, but in the meantime there are plenty more brilliant eco-friendly hotels around the world worth having on the radar.
