'Dreamt of this moment' - Sunderland fans in tears after ending Wembley hoodoo against Tranmere

Sunderland fans are feeling ecstatic after the club ended their Wembley hoodoo with victory against Tranmere Rovers in the EFL Trophy final this afternoon.

Close to half a century - and nine visits - on from their last win to the national stadium, the Black Cats are celebrating after Lynden Gooch settled the scores beneath the famous arch.

It was the second Trophy showpiece to be played at Wembley in 24 hours due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

And the only crying shame is that Sunderland's ever-passionate supporters weren't there in attendance to witness the historic day as Lee Johnson's men saw off League Two opposition to pick up the silverware.

They did, though, watch on from home and celebrate from the moment the final whistle blew.

Sunderland lift the EFL Trophy after beating Tranmere

Here are a selection of comments made by Sunderland fans on social media in response to this afternoon's iconic Wembley victory.

@sdavieslaw said: "What a day to be a Sunderland fan!"

@StewHellens posted: "Relieved. Buzzing. Proud. Not a vintage performance, but another clean sheet and the trophy is heading to the NE. The ultimate goal is promotion and that is evident in the post-match interviews. Hopefully today is the catalyst towards achieving that!"

@dodsy_adam added: "After years of constant disappointment and being let down, today feels like we have turned a corner. The feel-good factor is back and I couldn't be happier. We live for this football club and I'm over the moon to see us back on the right path and long may it continue."

@Jay_Alderson04 said: "I can't describe how I feel right now, except from the fact it feels good. Haway the lads!"

@GJFowler 73 posted: "How good was that seeing the red 'n' white wizards picking up a trophy? I've dreamt of that moment for so many years. It's only the 'pizza cup', but I couldn't care less. Let's go and win the league n have a proper celebration."

@NQDiscoPants added: "That's for everyone no longer with us who ever travelled down to Wembley only to come back up the A1 empty-handed. Who cares which cup we lifted on the day, a win at Wembley has been an awful long time coming."

@edwardo_no9 said: "That may not mean much to most, but it means the world to me and every SAFC supporter. Speaking to my dad afterwards and he was in tears. The beautiful game."

@frlydensmith posted: "This is what hard work and determination looks like. This is getting knocked down, but having the strength to get up and soldier on. This is what having an amazing fanbase with a sense of community can help achieve, with a few prayers along the way."

@Jamestweddell added: "I'm feeling absolutely great and I hope all those lads are as well. But I'm a little more delighted for both McGeady and Leadbitter. Different reasons for each, but either way you really deserve it boys."
