DreamMaker Foundation hit hard as huge fundraisers cancelled due to coronavirus pandemic

A Wishaw charity is counting the cost after the cancellation of three huge fundraisers since the Covid-19 pandemic began.

The Les Hoey DreamMaker Foundation has been forced to postpone its “DreamMaker Does Strictly” which was planned for February.

The event can’t take place due to the closeness of the dancers and the social distancing measures that are in place.

It’s is another massive blow to the charity on top of the cancellation of this year’s DreamMaker Ball which would have taken place earlier this month.

Angela Cook, from the Les Hoey MBE DreamMaker Foundation, admits the past six months have been very challenging.

She said: “Last year our charity ball raised £60,000 so that was a huge loss to us.

“Our Christmas party is also gone and last year the funds from the Kiltwalk raised £28,000.

“It’s just a nightmare that keeps going on and on.

“We still have our 50/50 draw but if you add everything up we could be talking as much as £100,000.”

The Foundation has essentially been put hold until the pandemic has been curtailed meaning dozens of kids are missing out on their dreams coming true.

With fundraising drying up Angela and the rest of the DreamMaker team have been working hard to keep funds coming in.

These include the charity’s draw and a number of online raffles.

Angela added: “We can’t help any kids at the moment unless there is very special circumstances.

“It’s so difficult.

“The sad thing is we are still getting requests from kids who have been diagnosed with particular illnesses but we can’t do anything for them at this time.

“It’s horrendous.

“To think we might have to go through another six months like this is just horrific.

“We are hoping for a big Christmas raffle which we are working towards.

“We will be okay as we have kept money for a rainy day although we didn’t expect anything like this.”
