'Dread' as Pontins bosses with 'worst hotel chain in the country' make another purchase

Southport's MP has spoken out on the recent purchase of the Royal Clifton Hotel due to concerns over the reputation of buyers Britannia Hotels.

The chain already owns two of Southport’s busiest hotels, Scarisbrick Hotel and Prince of Wales, but Damien Moore said he is concerned with the freefall the company seem to be in.

Britannia Hotels have been voted worst hotel chain in the country for eight years in a row by Which? consumer magazine.

Mr Moore told the ECHO: “I do feel as though it is a managed decline. I don’t feel as though there is any real effort to revitalise these hotels, not significantly anyway.

“Really, it just gives me a sense of dread that they would purchase another hotel when we have so much concern over the two hotels they have here in Southport and about Pontins [in Formby] as well.”

The comments come after Mr Moore and 16 other MPs signed a letter to MP Julian Knight, chair of the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee.

The letter called for an inquiry in Britannia Hotels “to establish the facts of what is going so drastically wrong with a view to implementing a route to bring it back on track.”

Mr Moore said: “I would have hoped Britannia would have tried to do more to rebuild their reputation rather than go in, extend their estate and, as far as I am concerned, don’t appear to be putting any remedial work into what they already have.”

The chain recently held a recruitment day for the three hotels they own in Southport, with a vast number of roles being up for grabs.

Britannia Hotels were contacted for comment.
