Draymond Green is first Golden State star to get player option on long-term deal

The Golden State Warriors have been the model franchise over the past five seasons. They have made the Finals for five consecutive seasons, winning three of those titles, and finding sustained success.

To do so, they have to keep their core intact and they have this summer by keeping both Klay Thompson and Draymond Green in tow. The Warriors gave Green a four-year $100 million maximum deal on Saturday and he has a little wrinkle in his contract.

According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, Green will have a player option in the fourth year of the contract in 2023. He will become the first star of this dynasty run to have a player option in a long-term deal.

Green has become the heart and soul of the Warriors despite averaging just 7.4 points, 7.3 rebounds and 6.9 assists in 2018-19. With the losses of Kevin Durant to free agency and Thompson to injury, Golden State will need Green to be the difference-maker in helping the team have more success despite those two major losses in personnel.
