The domestic spread of the new coronavirus saw a dramatic increase within the past week. Although only 40 new cases of the virus were confirmed on March 23, clusters of infected persons have appeared in places, such as Eiju General Hospital in Taito Ward, Tokyo and the Hokuso Ikuseien welfare facility for the intellectually impaired in Tonosho, Chiba Prefecture. On March 28, the number of cases confirmed on the day surpassed 200 for the first time.
Each day since March 31, the numbers have surpassed 200 and on Friday reached 354. The numbers of confirmed cases in Tokyo are especially high with the highest number yet of 97 announced on Thursday. Also, the numbers in Osaka have continued to surpass 30 people every day since the beginning of April.
