Dramatic video shows water shooting into the air after main bursts in County Durham

This dramatic footage shows water spraying through the air after a main burst overnight.

The A690 had to be closed between Stonebridge and Langley Moor in Durham while emergency services dealt with the incident.

The road has now reopened but delays remain as temporary traffic lights were put in place.

Workers from Northumbrian Water remain on scene working on the issue.

A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary said: "The A690 Stonebridge to Langley Moor has now re-opened following an earlier road closure.

“There are now temporary traffic lights in place which are still expected to cause slight delays.

“Northumbria Water are continuing to work to resolve the water mains burst which is effecting the area.”

The Durham Police K9 Twitter account added: "Motorists expect delays on the A690 by Fred Henderson’s on approach to StoneBridge.

"We would advise taking an alternative route whilst @ NorthumbrianH2O deal with the situation."

Major changes to the Tyne Tunnel - including removal of toll barriers - could take a big step forward
