Dramatic video shows lorry stuck in bridge by M53

Dramatic video shows the moment a lorry got stuck under a bridge close to the M53, closing roads for more than SIX hours.

The DAF truck became lodged in the railway bridge on Woodchurch Road close to junction 3 of the M53 on the Wirral and an access route to a nearby Asda and Arrowe Park hospital.

Fortunately the driver avoided any injury after trying to drive his vehicle through the 15.5 feet high bridge - just weeks after another lorry lost its roof in the same location.

The crash happened just after 11.20pm last night and meant both Woodchurch Road and Ennerdale Road were closed for more than six hours.

An engineer came out to give the bridge the all clear and the roads eventually reopened just before 6am today after debris was cleared away.

A Merseyside Police spokesman said: "We were called at 11.23pm last night to reports a lorry had hit a bridge on Woodchurch Road close to the Asda store and causing an obstruction."

He added: "It caused road closures at that time. The driver was not injured and the road was re-opened at 5.43am."

The crash follows another crash at the bridge on April 5.

On that occasion the light Scania lorry lost part of its roof when its driver made an unsuccessful bid to negotiate the bridge.

The driver avoided injury but the incident on the road sparked congestion with one lane closed in both directions.

Buses were affected as a result of the crash.
