Dramatic scenes at High Force as heavy rain sees waterfall become 'extremely powerful'

High Force is one of England's most stunning waterfalls which attracts huge crowds to admire its beauty each year.

Situated at Forest-in-Teesdale, in the heart of the Durham Dales, the waterfall makes for a stunning photo opportunity for walkers and visitors. However, High Force looked strikingly different last week following a period of intense rain.

A dramatic video captured on January 7, shows how the current had become extremely powerful and water levels had risen significantly. Raby Estates, which manages High Force, was unable to confirm the exact level the water had reached, but with more heavy rain forecast this week, the levels are likely to rise again.

The Met Office has predicted that heavy rain and strong winds are set to hit County Durham on Thursday night (January 12) with more heavy rain and strong winds set to continue on Friday afternoon (January 13), with gusts reaching 35mph.

On its website, Raby Estates said that High Force is at its most powerful during the winter, especially after heavy rainfall when it "flows with tremendous force". It warned visitors that the waterfall can be extremely dangerous and urged people to keep children and pets under close supervision at all times, especially at the water’s edge.

"We ask visitors never to enter the water for any reason," Raby Estates said online. "The water levels can change suddenly and without warning, the current is extremely powerful."
