Dramatic pictures show the smouldering shell of an old north Manchester school building following devastating fire

A former school building has been left a smouldering shell after it was destroyed by a huge fire.

Firefighters were called to the blaze at the old Camberwell School site, on Bank House Road, in Higher Blackley, in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Images taken of the scene this morning show the building has burned down to just the framework.

At its height there were 50 firefighters tackling the flames, but the operation has since been scaled down.

The fire is now under control, with fire crews remaining at the scene to damped down any hot spots.

Bank House Road remains closed in both directions, while residents in the area are being advised to keep their doors and windows shut.

Fire crews are also warning residents water levels are low in the area while they tackle the fire.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage and fire chiefs will be carrying out an investigation when it is safe to go inside.

Neighbours in the area said they felt 'emotional' as they watched flames rip through the building.

Louise Morgan, who lives opposite the building, said: "I woke up about 1.20am to banging. I thought it was the bin men.

"I came outside. It was bad, black smoke everywhere.

"It seemed to just go through so fast. We were stood outside for an hour.

"By the time we went in it was covering the building. I was quite emotional, looking through the window I didn't expect it.

"We had to move our cars. It went up quickly and the building started collapsing."

Group Manager Phil Nelson from GMFRS said: “It has been a tough few hours but the fire is now essentially out.

"Our firefighters have worked tirelessly to extinguish the flames and we will be here through the day ensuring that the scene is fully damped down and there are no further hotspots.

“It is too early at this stage to speculate about a cause. I want to thank colleagues from Greater Manchester Police, North West Ambulance Service, the Environment Agency, utilities companies and the local council for their assistance.”
