Dramatic pictures show car engulfed in flames on M62

Dramatic pictures showed smoke billowing from a car engulfed in flames after it caught fire on the M62 near Salford.

All traffic was stopped on the westbound carriageway between junction 12 and junction 11 due to the blaze, according to Highways England.

It is believed the 4x4 caught fire at around 11.30am.

Photos of the vehicle well alight were posted on Twitter by Highways England.

A spokesman for Cheshire Police said: "At 11.28am on Monday 2 November emergency services were called to reports of a vehicle fire on the M62 westbound, between junctions 12 (Eccles interchange) and 11 (Birchwood)."

"Highways England and Greater Manchester fire are in attendance and there are no reports of any injuries."

A spokesman for North West Motorway Police said that by 12.30pm one lane remained closed.

A spokeswoman for the North West Ambulance Service said they were not called to the scene.
