Dramatic pictures show aftermath of M1 crash that shut part of motorway for 6 hours

Shocking pictures show the aftermath of a crash on the M1 between a car and two lorries.

The incident happened around 3.30pm yesterday (August 5) on the northbound slip road of the M1 at junction 24 for East Midlands Airport.

Incredibly, the driver of the BMW car pictured, managed to escape with only minor injuries, Leicestershire Live reports.

The pictures show what was left of the vehicle after the driver had to be cut free by fire crews.

The car is barely recognisable as it had been crushed at both ends, however the driver's seat appears to have the least damage and the airbag had deployed.

One of the lorries also had serious damage to the front.

In a statement about the rescue, a spokesman from the Castle Donington Fire crew described the extrication of the casualty as 'complicated'.

Leicestershire Police and East Midlands Ambulance Service were also at the scene of the incident.

Four people were taken to hospital for treatment although the extent of their injuries is unknown.

In a post from the Castle Donington Fire Twitter page, a fire service spokesman said: "Today our crew attended a road traffic collision the incident involved two heavy goods vehicles and a car.

"It was a complicated extraction but the casualty was freed and taken to hospital with only minor injuries. Please remember to check your vehicle, before long journeys."

The slip road was closed by police for almost six hours, and two lanes of the M1 from junctions 23a to junction 24 were also shut by officers.
