Dramatic picture shows extent of Ayrshire railway line landslip causing chaos for passengers

This is the stunning aerial image which shows engineers repairing a 1700-ton landslip on a busy railway line.

Services between Kilmarnock and Dumfries are suspended until the middle of next month due to the slip following Storm Ciara near Holywood, Dumfriesshire.

The incident happened beneath a 50-metre stretch of track when strong winds and heavy rain caused the River Nith to erode an emabankment.

Rail replacement bus services are in operation with Auchinleck and New Cumnock stations in East Ayrshire and Kirkconnel and Sanquhar stations in Dumfriesshire impacted.

A new haul road is being built in order to get materials to the remote site.

Tom Podger, Network Rail’s project manager for the reinstatement work, said: “Flooding caused by Storm Ciara has led to significant damage beneath the track and we will need to rebuild the supporting embankment before reinstating and re-opening the line.

“The landslip is located in a difficult location above the river and the remoteness of the site presents a challenge in getting equipment and materials to the site.

“We are though working through these issues as quickly as possible to get the line re-opened for customers.”
