Dramatic picture shows burnt out shell of car on Ashington street

An investigation has been launched after a car went up in flames in Northumberland.

Emergency services were called to Ashington on Thursday night after reports of the blaze.

A crew from Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service extinguished the fire in the car on Alexandra Avenue shortly before midnight.

Dramatic pictures taken at the scene show firefighters using hose reels to contain the flames and others show the remains of the burnt out car.

Enquiries into the cause of the fire are now under way and no further information is being released.

A spokeswoman for the fire service said: "We were called at 11.54pm to a vehicle fire on Alexandra Road.

"We sent a pump from Pegswood. An investigation is now ongoing."
