Three prison inmates have been hailed as heroes after they saved the life of a police officer on duty.
Deputy Warren Hobbs, 46, was working at the Gwinnett County Jail, in the US state of Georgia, when he suffered a heart attack on July 10.
Mitchell Smalls and was locked in his cell when he noticed that Deputy Hobbs appeared unwell.
He then saw the officer collapse, so began pounding on the doors and calling for help.
The sound soon woke up the entire unit even rousing the semi-conscious officer.
Deputy Hobbs then managed to hit a door release button enabling Mr Loveless and Mr Whitehead to rush out to his aid.
The pair immediately radioed for help and called 911. Emergency services arrived and took the police deputy to hospital.
He is now back at home where he is receiving medical care.
Thanking his rescuers, Deputy Hobbs said: "I very much appreciate what these inmates did for me.
“It's a reminder to always treat everyone well."
Deputy Shannon Volkodav, Public Information Officer at the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office described the incident as bringing “tears to my eyes”.
She said in a statement: "This story beautifully illustrates how heroes can appear in different uniforms.
"They came to his aid and we are deeply appreciative of their kind, courageous and selfless actions. It brings tears to my eyes.
"Deputy Hobbs might not be here today if it wasn't for them. It doesn't matter what station you are at in life, you can still be a hero.
"We are indebted to anyone who shows a kindness to anyone in our law enforcement family."
Prison authorities arranged a pizza party for all of the inmates in the unit to thank them for their bravery.
