Dramatic moment house went up in flames as neighbours rushed out to help in Gunthorpe

Concerned neighbours have described the dramatic moment they saw 'orange' from a window of a house which caught fire and left one occupant trapped.

Firefighters from across the county were called to reports of a house fire in Davids Lane, in Gunthorpe, at around 3.49pm on Monday, December 7.

An occupant who was trapped was rescued by the fire service.

Firefighters put out the fire within an hour and it's believed the fire started on the first floor of the property, where a window could seen to be hanging off.

Villagers rushed to help the occupants on the day - and locals described the dramatic scenes the fire crews were faced with.

Darren Webster, 47, who lives in Davids Lane, said: "My wife went out to care for the woman that had just got out of the house, there were two of them in there.

"You don't expect that sort of thing to happen.

"I'd seen that the fire brigade in Bingham struggled to get out as quickly as they would have hoped, but they were still here quite quickly."

Lesley Knight, of Davids Lane, said: "We saw smoke and flames from the bedroom window, there was a lot of smoke, and you could just see orange from the bedroom window."

One resident who lives nearby said it had caused 'worry' and that the incident had been 'scary'.

Jeannie Matts, who lives in Pasture View, at the back of Davids Lane, said: "It's a bit scary and it's obviously a worry, it's not nice.

"While I don't know the neighbours that well, I do worry about people's safety."

A resident who lives on Davids Lane, who did not wish to be named, added: "It brings it home a bit when it's your neighbours' house that catches fire."

Firefighters from four different stations were called to the blaze, but when Bingham crews tried to leave their station in Long Acre, a van was using their entrance to turn around.

This put the person trapped in 'great danger', the fire service said.

Details of any potential injuries are unclear at this stage.
