Dramatic lorry smash causes 3 miles of queues on the M6

A section of the M6 was blocked after a crash involving a lorry and van near Sandbach Services in Cheshire.

The emergency services were called out to the scene at around 12.36pm today following reports of a crash between a lorry and a van.

Photographs released by the North West Motorway Police appeared to show both the van and lorry on the grass embankment of the busy motorway. The lorry appeared to have jack-knifed.

The accident was described by police as damage only.

The crash blocked the south bound section of the M6.

A spokesman for North West Motorway Police said: "This was the officers scene when arriving at RTC on M6 near Sandbach, thankfully no injuries, @highwaysnwest arranging for carriageway to be cleared and re-open lanes 1/2 and 3.."

Highways England said: "Please be aware there are long delays on the #M6 southbound 17 to J16 due to the ongoing collision. There is approx.3 miles of congestion which is likely to add around 30 mins onto usual journey times."

A spokesman for Cheshire Police said: "At 12.36pm on Wednesday May 13 police were called to a collision involving a lorry and a van on the M6 between junction 17 to junction 16. Ambulance and police have attended to the scene. There are no details of any injuries."
