Dramatic images show devastation at holiday park where 40 caravans were destroyed by fire

Shocking aerial pictures show the scale of devastation caused by a huge fire which ripped through a holiday park destroying at least 40 caravans.

Flames tore through a storage area at Ainmoor Grange Caravan Park in Stretton, near Alfreton, after the blaze broke out around 5.30am on Wednesday, March 27.

Fire crews rushed to the scene and spent more than three hours tackling the inferno, which sent thick black smoke billowing into the air that was visible for miles around.

Luckily, nobody was injured and investigators from Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service are continuing to examine the cause of the fire.

Photographs taken from the air today, Thursday, show the blackened and charred remains of a row of caravans which were gutted by the blaze.

Residents of the park say they have been left "heartbroken" after losing their caravans, some of which were worth £30,000.

The owner of one caravan said: "The caravan I had was my grandfather's and had been passed through my whole family.

"I remember going on holidays to Bognor Regis and Scarborough as a child and now it's just a pile of ash. I'm heartbroken.

"Some of my fondest memories were in that caravan."

Michael Cheetham said he was "devastated" he had lost items in the fire which reminded him of his dead brother.

He added: "I'm devastated, I saw a video of them blowing up - mine's definitely gone. I feel particularly sorry for the owners, they're wonderful people."

One woman said her caravan, which she used for holidays, had been in the family "for generations".

She said: "It's all we could afford, but it was all we needed- my husband and I and our two little dogs.

"We live in the area and got a message from a relative this morning, warning us there was a fire.

"We could see it from our window and we just knew. The van was gone."

John Cook, from Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service, said on Wednesday: “Crews made an aggressive attack on the fire and created a fire break.

"By doing that we managed to contain the area to the place of origin and reduce significant damage to the whole campsite.”

The popular site is home to around 500 caravans - both static and touring - believed to be worth between £3,000 and £30,000.
