Dramatic images show collapsed roof after homes struck by lightning

Two homes have been badly damaged after being struck by lightning overnight.

It comes as a Met Office warning for thunderstorms sweeps across the South West as the heatwave comes to an end.

The Mirror reported that Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service attended the incident in Andover.

Dramatic images show the roof completely caved in with some smoke rising from inside both semi-detached homes.

It has been reported that a 70-year-old woman escaped unharmed.

Firefighters were on the scene at approximately 6:30am today (Saturday, July 24).

In a post on Twitter, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said: “HIWFRS firefighters are on the scene in Mercia Avenue, Andover. After a house was struck by lightning.

“Please be advised there is a road closure in place at this incident.”

Hundreds of people have witnessed thunderstorms overnight.

The Met Office has put in a yellow weather warning for this weekend across the South of the UK.

Forecasters have warned it may lead to some disruption and flooding across the area.

The Met Office website warns of what to expect over the next 48 hours.

They said: “Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.

“Flooding of homes and businesses could happen quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes or hail.

“Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.

“Power cuts might occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost.”
