Dramatic image shows fire which took hold of land in Cotgrave

A fire on a piece of land in Cotgrave has damaged fencing around sports courts in the village.

Richard Sparkman was staying in accommodation across the road from the football courts when he saw the fire take hold of the grounds.

Fire crews from London Road and West Bridgford were called to the scene on Friday, April 19.

Mr Sparkman said: "I've been staying across the road from the courts for the past week and happened to look out the window last evening just shortly after 8pm.

"At that point the fire had just started and the flames were relatively low.

"However, by 8.30pm the fire had spread spanning the entirety of the fence line and the surrounding foliage and wooden components were fully engulfed.

"Fire crews responded quickly and began fighting the blaze and police arrived shortly after to question the many onlookers that were present.

"The flames were extinguished by 9.30pm, and the emergency crews left the scene around 10pm. Upon inspection this morning, the courts suffered little damage, though the tall green metal facade shows signs of charring and all foliage and wooden/aluminum fencing have been destroyed."

A spokesman for Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue said: "Crews from London Road and West Bridgford were in attendance at a grass and undergrowth fire at Woodview, Cotgrave. Two 45mm jets and two hose reels are in use."

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
