Dramatic image shows aftermath of crash which shut road near Tameside park

At least two people have been taken to hospital following a smash in Stalybridge.

Emergency services were called to Stamford Street, near to Stamford Park, just after 12.20pm today.

The road remained closed into the evening rush-hour while investigation work was carried out.

GMP is yet to release exact details of any injuries suffered.

It's understood the collision involved a red Hyundai Amica and a silver Audi A3

Photos from the scene show the aftermath of the crash.

The Audi appears to have hit a street sign and suffered extensive damage.

Debris from the smash litters the road, and damage can also be seen to the Hyundai.

Fire crews helped to free an elderly woman from one of the cars.

An elderly man, and another, believed to be younger man, were also injured.

The crash happened close to West Hill School, and diversions have been put in place between Clarence Street and Rassbottom Street while the road remains closed.

GMP said: "We were called shortly before 12.20pm to a report of a two-vehicle collision in Stalybridge.

"A silver Audi A3 and red Hyundai Amica were in collision at the junction of Astley Road and Stamford Street.

"The road was closed at junction of Rassbottom Street and Stamford Street and traffic diverted up Ridge Hill Lane.

"Drivers of both cars have been taken to hospital."

A spokesman for NWAS said: "We were called at 12.21pm and sent two ambulances and two rapid response vehicles to the scene.

"We treated three patients, and two ambulances went to hospital."

GMFRS added: "We sent two engines from Stalybridge and Ashton, as well as the Technical Response Unit from Ashton to an RTC involving two vehicles.

"One casualty was cut free.

"We were on scene for about an hour."
