Dramatic helicopter rescue lifts walker from Scots mountain after ankle break

A massive rescue effort was launched and a walker dramatically airlifted by helicopter after breaking their ankle walking on a Scots mountain.

The walker had taken a stroll on Criffel, near Dumfries yesterday when they were injured near the summit.

Police, ambulance, mountain rescue and a search and rescue helicopter all rushed to the rural scene to help.

11 mountain rescue workers hiked up the 570m mountain and gave the person first aid while they waiting on the helicopter.

They were lifted onto the machine and rushed to hospital for treatment.

A statement from Moffat Mountain Rescue Team said that police asked for their assistance at around 2pm yesterday.

It adds: "Dumfries Galloway Police Division requested the assistance of Moffat Mountain Rescue Team to assist Scottish Ambulance Service with the rescue of a walker on Criffel, near Dumfries.

"11 team members responded and made their way to the casualty site with first aid equipment and a stretcher.

"Rescue 199, a search and rescue helicopter from Prestwick also responded and arrived on scene at the same time as team members.

"The team and the helicopter winchman treated the casualty and the scene and prepared the casualty for winching into the helicopter.

"The walker had suffered a suspected broken ankle near the summit of the hill.

"The team then escorted the causality's husband from the hill and stood down, cleaning all the team equipment in preparation for next time it may be required."

The heroism of the team has been praised on social media.

One person wrote: "Well done to all involved and wishing a speedy to recovery to the casualty."

Another added: "Well done and thank you. We watched you fly over us in Trostan forest and then up to the summit."
