Dramatic footage shows moment man almost swept out to sea after attempting to swim in choppy Scots water

This is the heart-stopping moment a man is nearly dragged into the depths of the North Sea before being rescued by Scots coastguard heroes.

The man is seen scrambling atop rocks as waves wash over him again and again.

He slides about the rock he has taken refuge on after his ill-fated attempt at a swim near Arbroath cliffs on Sunday.

The waves almost go over his head (Coastguard)

The video, posted on the Facebook page of HM Coastguard Angus and Mearns, came with a warning to be careful in the sea.

A statement posted with the video reads: "The male had been attempting to swim from the cliffs towards Arbroath on an outgoing tide, but within minutes of him being in the water had gotten into difficulty.

"Officers attended the scene and upon arrival found that the casualty had managed to get back onto rocks.

"Arbroath Lifeboat were also tasked to assist but were stood down before launching."

The man's lucky escape should prove a warning to anyone else thinking of taking to the water.

It continued: "Whilst the water may look very fresh and welcoming, the sea is always colder than you think and the currents can sometimes be stronger than you can swim, especially on an outgoing tide.

"Please always check the tide times and the state of the water before going for a swim and ensure that you are wearing the appropriate clothing."

The warning comes shortly after the tragic death of 20-year-old Keivan Ulhaq who died while swimming with pals at a beauty spot.

He had been enjoying an evening at Lochore Meadows Country Park, near Lochgelly, Fife, on Saturday when he got into difficulty in the water.

Hero bystanders found the 20-year-old before pulling him into their boat and giving him CPR as they raced back to dry land.

But he could not be saved and died in hospital.
