Dramatic footage shows flashflood hit County Durham after thunderstorm

The Bank Holiday heatwave came to an abrupt end when heavy rain and flash flooding hit County Durham .

Dramatic footage caught by Sharon Ellwood, 44, shows water gushing down the stairs outside her mum's home on Derby Drive in Moorside.

Heavy rain can be seen sweeping along the pathway as a thunderstorm hit the area on Tuesday night.

Sharon said: "It just happened so quickly we weren't expecting that much rain that quickly. I'd say it didn't even last half an hour.

"The water came in under the back door and into the bathroom through the shower drain (it's a wet room).

"Luckily I was there so we got towels and a mop to dry it up and clean it - no damage was done."

It comes after residents shared videos of heavy downpours in the area, with water flooding The Dene in Consett , and Snow's Green Road in Shotley Bridge was badly flooded.

Amy Odene, 28, had only moved into her Shotley Bridge home two weeks ago and has never seen rain like it before.

She said: "The sky went really dark and there were a few spots of rain and then all of a sudden it came absolutely crashing down.

"I’ve never seen rain like it, it was hitting the windows so hard it sounded like it was going to come through into the house.

"It lasted about 10 minutes by which time the whole of the front road outside the house was completely flooded."

The heavy downpour came after the hottest Bank Holiday on record , with temperatures reaching 28.6C in parts.

Following the heatwave, the Met Office put a thunderstorm warning in place on Tuesday.
