Dramatic escape for hillwalker stuck on summit near Crianlarich

A hillwalker had to be airlifted from a mountainside near Crianlarich after becoming stranded.

The man needed assistance making his way off of Ben More on Saturday evening.

Believed to be in his 50s, he was walking alone on the hillside when he got into difficulty on a steep craggy snow slope near the summit.

Unable to safely regain the footpath the walker called police for help. Officers then called in the expertise of volunteers from Killin Mountain Rescue Team.

Fifteen team members with full winter kit climbed above the man and set up a rope system to bring him to safety. Upon reaching him, rescuers decided that it was too dangerous to bring him down and called for help from the Coastguard Search and Rescue Helicopter, from Prestwick, Ayrshire.

However, swirling mist and spindrifting snow made conditions challenging for the helicopter crew to reach the location. Working together, using the recently supplied Scottish Mountain Rescue digital radios, the team assisted the walker to a safe location where he was winched on to the helicopter and flown to safety.

Bill Rose of Killin MRT said: “The man did the correct thing. He stopped and called for help rather than try to make his way down from what was a dangerous location. A big thank you has to go to the Coastguard team. It was very challenging conditions.

“Luckily, the man was a bit cold but otherwise he was alright and was able to go home shortly after being rescued.”

He added: “Spring may be here but it’s still winter on the tops. Be prepared with an ice axe and crampons for snow and ice higher up. Know how to micro navigate in mist by map and compass when you leave a top as safe descent routes can be hard to find in mist when paths are snow covered.”
