Dramatic East Lothian rescue as schoolgirls call 999 after becoming stranded in rising tide

Two East Lothian schoolgirls had to be rescued by lifeboat crews after becoming stranded in the rising tide.

Crews from Dunbar RNLI rushed to the town's East Beach on Wednesday afternoon after the children, aged 13 and 12, encountered difficulty.

Teams were paged and the inshore lifeboat (ILB) launched a short time later, arriving at the scene behind the old harbour at 4.45pm.

The girls were found to be unhurt but were cold and up to their thighs in water. They were then helped aboard the lifeboat before being returned safely to the harbour at 5.05pm.

ILB helm Alan Blair said: “The girls were a little embarrassed but they did the right thing by calling 999 and asking for the coastguard, especially with the tide still rising. It’s good to see our safety message is getting through."

Anyone who gets into trouble in the water or sees something else suspicious is urged to call 999 and ask for the coastguard.

Crews were as follows. ILB: Alan Blair, Kieran Fairbairn, Andrzej Hajduk, Chris Woods. DLAs/Shore crew: David Kittrick, Dave Anderson, Gipper Ainslie, Gary Fairbairn, Alistair Punton, Kevan Jamieson, Gordon Kirkham, Ross McMullen.
