Dramatic coastguard rescue after man stranded by tide at Marsden Grotto

A man was rescued by the coastguard after getting stranded when he was cut off by the tide at Marsden Grotto.

Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team and South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade (SSVLB) were called at 4.17am on Friday morning (June 11) to Marsden Grotto.

The teams used rope rescue equipment and two water rescue operators to locate the casualty.

The man was recovered by the Tynemouth RNLI lifeboat who took him to shore where he was checked over.

A spokesperson for the Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team said: "Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team and South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade (SSVLB) were called out early Friday morning to a person cut off by the tide at Marsden Grotto.

"We attended Marsden where the teams worked together using rope rescue equipment to locate the casualty, as well as two water rescue operators, waded the base of the cliffs to locate him.

"Once located the inshore lifeboat from Tynemouth RNLI lifeboat was requested to recover the casualty to the beach at Marsden where he was checked over but required no further assistance.

"In all coastal emergencies dial 999 and ask for the coastguard."
