Dramatic city centre rescue sees members of public and fire service pull man out of the River Irwell

Two members of the public tried to rescue a person from the River Irwell before he was pulled out by the fire service.

The incident, which took place near Irwell Street at around 8.40pm on Wednesday evening, saw the road closed off to the public for around half an hour.

Images taken at the scene showed around six emergency services vehicles near to the closed Mark Addy pub and the People's History Museum.

Three engines, a boat crew and two technical rescue vehicles were sent to the scene after the emergency services were called at around 8.40pm.

The condition of the man who was rescued from the water is not known. It is not known how he ended up in the water.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service told the M.E.N: "The fire service was called at 8.24pm to Left Bank after receiving reports of a person in the water.

"The fire service rescued one casualty from the water.

"Two members of the public have tried to help the man out of the water before emergency services arrived on the scene.

"A man has been taken to hospital. GMFRS were on the scene for around 30 minutes."
