Drama as low flying police helicopter circles Lanarkshire town in hunt for runaway driver

A police helicopter was deployed last night to hunt a runaway driver who dodged a road traffic check in Lanarkshire.

Shocked East Kilbride residents reported sightings of a Force helicopter circling Gardenhall/Newlandsmuir and flying "really low" over fields in the area at around 9.30pm.

Police told Lanarkshire Live officers in Hamilton had tried to stop a vehicle in the area's Purdie Avenue for a road traffic check but the motorist drove off at speed.

Extensive searches were carried out in Hamilton and East Kilbride but the driver is still at large.

A Police Scotland spokesman told Lanarkshire Live : “Around 9.30pm on Monday, August 29, police in Hamilton attempted to stop a vehicle in the Purdie Avenue area, in connection with road traffic checks.

"The vehicle sped from the area and searches were carried out throughout the Hamilton and East Kilbride areas, with no results.

"Further enquiries are ongoing.”

Anyone with information should call police on 101.
