Dragons winger Ashton Hewitt ruled out of Wales summer tour and set to miss the rest of 2021 with knee injury

Dragons speedster Ashton Hewitt is poised to miss the rest of 2021, including any Wales tour that takes place this summer, after suffering a serious knee injury.

The 26-year-old sustained damage to his anterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament in a tackle whilst scoring against Northampton last weekend.

He will now undergo surgery and it's being reported he won't be seen against until 2022, meaning at least eight months on the sidelines.

Dean Ryan, Director of Dragons Rugby, said: “It’s incredibly disappointing news for Ashton who was playing some outstanding rugby for us.

“He will now undergo surgery early next week before starting his journey back from injury.

“We all send our best wishes to Ashton and wish him well with his recovery."

Hewitt enjoyed an outstanding season for the Dragons, playing in 15 of the region's 16 league matches.

He beat 52 defenders in the Guinness PRO14 this season - more than anyone else - and made 20 clean breaks, showing form that threw him into Wales contention.

The winger looked nailed on to finally receive that elusive Wales cap on a development tour to Argentina and Uruguay - if it goes ahead - this summer.

But, with those teams poised to come to the UK for summer matches due to Covid, Hewitt will be watching on from the sidelines.
