Dragons v Scarlets team news: Coach makes bold statement, while departing star looks to showcase talent

Will Boyde will be aiming to show potential suitors what he can do when he features for the Scarlets in the Judgement Day clash against the Dragons at the Principality Stadium (3).

James Davies failed a late fitness test on a hamstring problem and so sits out the Guinness PRO14 encounter in Cardiff.

The players with most to gain on Judgement Day as Warren Gatland finalises World Cup squad

But it is a chance for Boyde to showcase his worth.

The popular back rower is being released at the end of the season and is so far without a team for next term. Cardiff Blues did express an interest in a forward who can play across the back row and whose strength and low centre of gravity makes him a threat at the breakdown, but no firm offer has been forthcoming.

One of the Dragons' brightest young talents provides the region with some much-needed good news

A strong performance wouldn’t hurt Boyde’s cause at all, then.

Dan Jones, handed a new contract by the Scarlets this week, takes the No. 10 shirt ahead of Rhys Patchell, while Ioan Nicholas starts on the left wing, with Steff Evans succumbing to a hamstring problem.

Blade Thomson is named in a matchday squad for the first time since suffering concussion in the game with Edinburgh in November.

Scarlets head coach Wayne Pivac said: “There is still a lot to play for. It’s an opportunity to get four or five points if we play well enough. Mathematically that could still keep our season alive.

“We’ve had a very disrupted season so we want to finish on a high note. We still have an opportunity to finish third and possibly fourth which would give us a play-off for the Champions Cup.”

The Dragons recall prop Lloyd Fairbrother and lock Joe Davies to their starting line-up.

Lewis Evans moves to blindside flanker and Aaron Wainwright switches across to the scrum to openside.

Fit-again Richard Hibbard is among the replacements alongside Jared Rosser, who this week signed a long-term contract extension at Dragons.

Head Coach Ceri Jones said: “If we can put on a performance that we know we are capable of, and have shown in a lot of Welsh derbies this year, then anything can happen.

“It’s about us going toe-to-toe with the Scarlets and seeing who comes out of top.

“We were depleted in the front row last time against the Scarlets and that’s not going to be the case in this game.

“We’ve got a bit of making up to do from that game and I truly believe that if we can put on our best performance we can be competitive with anyone in the league.”

For a side who are bottom of their conference, that's some statement.
