Dragons resolve salary dispute with players as they reach agreement over 25 per cent pay cuts

The Dragons are the latest region to resolve the pay dispute with their players.

To combat the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic, players have agreed to take a 25 per cent pay cut over the next 12 months.

David Buttress, Chairman at the Dragons, said: “We have been committed to a collaborative approach throughout this process and, on behalf of the Board, I thank the players for their combined efforts in agreeing a resolution that will ensure our business continues to move forward.

“We are extremely proud of how our playing group have conducted themselves during this difficult period.”

Earlier this month, the regions began negotiating with their own players after the Welsh Rugby Players' Association and the Professional Game Board - in charge of the professional game in Wales - failed to reach a collective agreement.

With the season restart looming next week, concerns were beginning to arise over whether deals would be struck in time for the games to continue.

The Scarlets were are understood to have sorted things in a short meeting between senior players and the region's top brass. Earlier this month, they announced that 17 players had signed new contracts and committed their future to the region.

There has been no word from the Cardiff Blues or the Ospreys on the situation but negotiations are thought to be ongoing.

Last week, new Ospreys boss Toby Booth said: "I know both sides are working hard to find a resolution on that side of things. I’m sure we’ll get there and hopefully common sense prevails."
