Dragons hope for Sam Davies Wales Six Nations call-up should Dan Biggar fears be confirmed

Dean Ryan hopes Sam Davies will be called up by Wales for next Saturday’s clash with England at Twickenham if Dan Biggar is declared unfit.

Outside-half Biggar was carried off after suffering a knee injury while on Gallagher Premiership duty for Northampton Saints against Saracens on Saturday.

As it stands, Cardiff Blues’ Jarrod Evans is the only fit No.10 in Wales coach Wayne Pivac’s squad.

Davies was in it for the uncapped fixture with the Barbarians last November – Pivac’s debut as Wales boss after succeeding Warren Gatland – but didn’t make his squad for the defence of the European title.

Wales are fourth in the table following defeats to Ireland and France but must beat England to stay in the hunt for a high finish.

Pivac will be sweating on the fitness of the hugely experienced Biggar but has to put a contingency plan into action.

Dragons director of rugby Ryan, speaking after Davies kicking the last-ditch penalty to give the Gwent region a 13-10 victory over the Cheetahs in Conference A of the Guinness PRO14, hopes it involves Davies.

“It may give him the chance to play on a nice, dry pitch," he said.

"It’s been difficult for Sam the last two weeks because with the weather it’s not been a place to be a 10 and try and play some rugby.

“He won’t be selected or non-selected on the last two weeks. In those conditions, it’s about steering your side around and getting it in good positions.

“Some of his kicking tonight [against Cheetahs] gave us really good field position. It wasn’t about being that precise, it was about not making many mistakes and keeping pressure on. Sam did that better than most."
